CowCatcher embodies a combination of three projects that came out of our experience in both preparing course materials and providing Java courses over the last four years.

1. HolyCow! - XML Content Management

HolyCow! is an XML content management framework to facilitate authoring of course material in a unique way.

Component-based material organization and assembly
The XML-source material is organized as small/standalone/cohesive lessons. Each lesson consists of slides, notes, examples, exercises, answers and background reading material. Lessons can be bundled together into modules. At the highest level an entire course can be assembled with a selection of modules.

Create Just-In-Time, tailor-made courses
Clients for our training courses can select only the training components (modules/lessons) they require. The entire set of training materials for a course is automatically assembled from the module repository and generated.

No Powerpoint
All final materials are web-based using Dynamic HTML (plus PDF for printing handouts).

Teach Java with Java
Since we are web and Java-based, we illustrate many of Java's aspects through applets within the slides.

2. CowJ - Java Course Content

All Java course materials are authored using the HolyCow! content management framework. The main authors are Just van den Broecke, Gerald de Jong and Jacco Kok. You can browse or dowload these materials using the links on this site.

Prefab Courses
Some standard courses have been assembled from our module repository in order to provide a standard Java curriculum. As indicated you can assemble your own course through a selection of modules.

3. CowPres - Online Web-based Presentation

CowPres is a set of presentation tools under development.

WebPres - Beamer-less presentation
Although you can still use a beamer, through the CowPres tools you can setup a web-based presentation. In the classroom, students will join in a multi-user websession, where your slides are automatically displayed in the student's browsers. The underlying technology is based on Just's Pushlets (see the pushlets site In the longer term this technology will enable us to provide training over the Internet.

CodeMovie - See code written before your eyes
In addition, our CowPres CodeMovie © application illustrates Java code examples through animation.
